In 2020, Narayani Mondal, a woman farmer from West Bengal, India, decided to start a household nutrition garden. The initiative was inspired by the Institute for Motivating Self Employment (IMSE), which help households establish kitchen gardens to improve family nutrition and promote sustainable family farming.

Narayani keeps her gardening process entirely natural. She uses zero chemical fertilizers or synthetic pesticides and she enriches her soil using only vermicompost and cow dung. This organic approach ensures that the produce grown is 100% pure and safe.

This small project brought major benefits to Narayani’s family. The nutrition garden secures a steady, bio-diverse, and healthy diet right from her backyard. Moreover, the garden makes productive use of unused household land, family labor, and free time.

The process of making a nutrition garden is simple; any family can do it. Seeing Narayani’s success, her neighbors took notice. Inspired by her plot, several women in the community decided to start their own organic nutrition gardens.
