In 1995, the irrigation canal in Yesagyo township, Magway region, Myanmar has been damaged, affecting some 200 farming households who rely on irrigation for the water supply for their farms. Four hundred 40 (450) acres of land in the area used to be planted with paddy (rice) and beans. The farmers had to overcome the water shortage by digging tube wells so they can continue the cultivation of their fields.
With the assistance of the Agriculture and Farmers Federation of Myanmar (AFFM), this 25-year old problem was finally given a solution.
The Basic Farmer Union in Yesagyo forwarded the issue to the Magway regional leaders. In May 2020, U Mya Soe, President of the Basic Agriculture and Farmers’ Union brought the issue up to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation. The Ministry then coordinated with
the township level department to look into the issue of the damaged irrigation canal.
On June 13, 2020, an official from the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department, accompanied by the head of the village and farmers’ union leaders, inspected the irrigation. On July 3, 2020, the Irrigation department of Magway Region, Pakokku District, Yesagyo
Township, in collaboration with the farmers’ union, started working on the new irrigation for the farmers. The farmers are now looking forward to more productive farmland with the new source of irrigation for their agriculture.
