When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food systems, smallholder farmers across Asia faced unprecedented challenges. Yet instead of giving up, they organized, innovated, and rose stronger together.
Through the ARISE (Assuring Resiliency of Family Farmers) program, farmers’ organizations across Asia proved that farmer-led solutions work. ARISE was a grant from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It is implemented by the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA).
From restoring livelihoods, strengthening markets in Cambodia, building climate-resilient communities, expanding market opportunities, empowering women and youth, to improving market access for farmers, ARISE has become a movement built on solidarity, trust, and resilience.
Since 2021, ARISE has:
- Reached over 20,000 farmers directly
- Supported more than 230 farmers’ organizations
- Expanded from 8 to 12 countries across Asia
- Benefited over half a million people
- Fully disbursed and fully repaid USD 1.85 million in revolving funds
Every success story sends a clear message: When farmers are trusted, they can lead recovery. When farmers are supported, they can build resilience.
