Recognizing and Strengthening the Contributions of Women Farmers in Climate Resilient Agriculture-Based Livelihoods

Around 100 women farmers from 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific region will gather in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India on October4-6 2017 for the Asia-Pacific Women Farmers’ Forum organized by Asian Farmers’ Association and La Via Campesina, and will be hosted by Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA).

The forum will be a venue for women farmers to discuss initiatives on promoting the role of women farmers in climate-resilient agriculture-based livelihood. Through the forum, the women farmers will be able to share their initiatives, experiences and learnings as well as their concerns and issues in agriculture.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the forum, the participants will be able to appreciate the  roles and contributions of women farmers in promoting food security, nutrition and climate resilient agriculture-based livelihoods as well as identify key action points to strengthen these roles through mechanisms in their respective organizational structures and platforms.

Specific objectives include:

  1. Share concrete examples of  initiatives of women farmers, through their organizations , in responding to their issues and concerns in agriculture and rural areas
  2. Give their learnings,  analysis, insights into SEWA’s comprehensive strategy and program in promoting climate-resilient agriculture
  3. Outline some ways forward in  strengthening women –led/managed FOs in promoting SDG 1 and 2 ( end poverty, end hunger, improved food security and nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture) based on their own country experiences and realities, and in what they have learned from SEWA.
