Celebrating the Achievements of AFOSP-MTCP2
27 April 2020 | 3:00 PM Manila Time | Zoom & Facebook
The ASEAN Farmers’ Organizations Support Programme (AFOSP) is a capacity-building program aimed at improving the livelihoods and food security situation of smallholder farmers and rural producers in ASEAN countries. Its objective is for ASEAN farmers organizations to evolve into stable, performing, accountable organisations capable of providing effective and sustainable services to their members and of influencing policy and corporate processes on agriculture and food security issues at local, national, ASEAN regional and global levels.
The Medium-Term Cooperation Programme phase II (MTCP2) and regional policy dialogue in ASEAN region (MTCP ASEAN) is one of two complementary actions under AFOSP. AFOSP-MTCP2 is funded by the European Union (EU) with co-financing from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The program was implemented in 2015 to 2020 in seven ASEAN countries through the consortium Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC). The consortium AFA – LVC worked in partnership with the ASEAN Foundation in expanding the spaces for the engagement of farmers organizations in ASEAN processes.
AFOSP-MTCP2 supported the strengthening of national farmers organizations and their national platform towards improving their institutional capacity to deliver economic services to their members as well as to effectively engage them in policy processes. In addition, the program reached and engaged more sectors including the women and youth to have a more significant involvement and impact in agriculture in the region. With the support of AFOSP-MTCP2, farmers’ organizations in ASEAN were able to bounce back and continue to build back better from the pandemic that heavily affected their livelihood.
As the AFOSP-MTCP2 implementation comes to an end, AFA-LVC held a virtual completion celebration to showcase the project’s achievements and lessons learned from the five years of implementation. The event was held on 27 April 2021 via Zoom and streamed live via the Asia-Pacific Farmers’ Forum Facebook at www.facebook.com/AsiaPacificFarmers. The event was attended by project stakeholders including the government, partner institutions, and farmers organizations from the ASEAN region.
We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to this event. Thank you for taking the time to witness some of the highlights of what the project has accomplished in the five years of implementation in the ASEAN region. We are happy to have gathered representatives and members of farmers’ organizations, development partners, non-government organizations, and government organizations. We hope that you enjoyed the program and we look forward to having you in future events.
