In a presentation at the 37th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) at the Peninsula Hotel in Makati City, Philippines last September 10, Hoonae Kim of IFAD Asia Pacific highlighted the importance of smallholders who produce 80% of the food in Asia. She said that, “Majority of investments are coming from the smallholders. What we international finance institutions and governments are providing are support to the majority of funds the farmers themselves generate. I think it is our job to make sure that their investments have the highest return as possible.” The presentation was part of the launching of the ASEAN Farmers’ Organizations Support Program (AFOSP) that provides additional support for farmer organizations in ASEAN countries who are participating in the Medium Term Cooperation Program Phase Two (MTCP2).
