In West Java, Indonesia, the Indramayu Regency is one of the country’s most important rice-producing areas. Here, members of the Indonesian Peasant Union/Serikat Petani Indonesia (SPI) have come together to form and manage the Indramayu Indonesian Peasant Cooperative (KPI/SPI Indramayu).
Through this cooperative, they are producing and marketing rice cultivated using agroecological practices—free from harmful chemicals and rooted in sustainable, traditional methods. This rice is grown within the Food Sovereignty Area established by SPI, ensuring that it is not only environmentally friendly but also safe, nutritious, and beneficial to the health of consumers. By embracing agroecology, these farmers are not just growing food—they are advancing a movement toward food sovereignty and community well-being.
This initiative is supported by the APFP-FO4A program, which is financed by the European Union (EU) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and implemented by the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC).
