In an organization, whether it is a profit or non-profit organization, the need for good and systematic financial information will assist the organization in planning. Financial reporting can also show the performance and good financial management of the organization (good governance). Financial reports can be used to make decisions by the organization internally or be used by external parties. The provision of financial information starts from the process of budget planning, financial policy, financial transactions, financial records, examination of financial documents, grouping of financial transactions, and financial reports.

Taking off from this need, MTCP2 Indonesia organized computer-based financial management training. This training was attended by the national farmers’ organization, the Indonesian Farmers’ Alliance (API), the Indonesian Farmers’ Union (SPI), the Indonesian Farmer and Fishermen Community Forum (WAMTI), and the non-governmental organization Indonesian Human Rights For Social Justice (IHCS). The training which was held at Hotel Sofyan Jakarta on 17-19 December 2015 was attended by around 20 participants. The training is aimed at providing understanding to the management of farmer organizations and NGOs in order to be able to provide systematic and accountable financial information in accordance with the financial accounting standards of non-profit / profit organizations.

“Knowledge in the field of financial management and accounting needs to be understood and possessed by the management of an organization,” said Muhammad Nuruddin, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Farmers’ Alliance (API) in the opening of the training. “Financial management training will help a farmer organization improve the performance of financial management and accounting processes. , so as to increase organizational accountability.”

Furthermore, the Secretary-General of API hopes that this training can help improve human resources (member management) in managing the finances of farmer organizations, given the importance of this for farmer organizations and their business organizations. The existence of good and systematic financial information will assist in the decision-making process and formulate the organization’s strategic plan. The same thing was expressed by Muhammad Rifai, the facilitator at the financial training.

“Financial information as a form of accountability has caught the attention of members of the organization and society in general,” explained Muhammad Rifai. “Financial management and the use of accounting are increasingly needed by profit and non-profit organizations. With accounting, it will produce financial information that is very useful for internal purposes such as organizational management in order to build organizational financial management, or for external parties such as funders, government, auditors, and the public to determine organizational accountability.

The training, which was held for three days, is expected to be able to improve the ability of farmer organizations in financial management and organizational accounting. In addition, farmer organizations are expected to be trained in implementing a computer-based financial management system.

“The results of the training using the Quick Book are very useful in facilitating my work as a bookkeeper at SPI,” said Ati Sulastri to Ferry Widodo during an interview. According to the Treasurer of the Indonesian Farmers Union who attended the Computer Based Financial Management training, the material presented in the training was easy to follow. “I did not encounter any obstacles in training. The material is easy for us to practice ”.

Meanwhile, Eman Sulaeman from the Hanjuang Cooperative, Banten, admitted that this training was very useful for the cooperatives he manages. The Hanjuang cooperative gets market access in the form of honey orders from PT Orindo Alam Ayu (Oriflame) with a monthly turnover of Rp. 225 million.

“We really need a good financial record system,” said Eman Sulaeman, who is also the Director of the Hanjuang Cooperative. “The timing of this training is just right, it coincides with the first time we received a down payment for the purchase of honey. Thank you to the National Secretariat of API, I hope Indonesian farmers will prosper in their own land. Amen!”
