The Aliansi Petani Indonesia (API) adheres to the Islamic concept of investment sharing, where 40% of the net income is returned to the “investor” (in this case, the mother federation, API) and 60% goes back to the member organization.
Concretely, the Metro Fish Marine group, which received USD 20,000 as BP support from APFP-FO4A through API, constructed two fish ponds in 2022. Each pond required a minimum investment of USD 10,000. In 2023, not only were they able to expand to ten fish ponds, but more so, the group was able to contribute USD 32,000 to API. The amount that was contributed back to the mother organization will be used to fund BPs by other member FOs through a call for proposal process.
Currently, the group is managing a total of 38 hectares equivalent to 150 ponds. APFP FO4A supported only ten ponds. One pond is managed by a group of 2 or 3 young fishers.
Moreover, women are also provided with extra income by cutting around 15 tons of bycatch fish for feed. This bycatch that was previously thrown as these are not saleable in the market, is now providing income to women in the community. Since the bycatch is not thrown back into the sea, it does not end up polluting the water.
API’s sustainability scheme does not end with the economic aspect, but also in supporting women in the community, engaging young fishers, and sustaining the environment.
