Laos was under lockdown on 1-19 April 2020. The government suspended or postponed all “unnecessary” social events such as weddings and Lao New Year celebrations. The government advised Lao people to avoid large gatherings.
During the lockdown, farmers were not able to bring their produce to the market because there is no transportation available. Many shops in the markets were also closed. Thus, the Lao Farmer Network (LFN), the national implementing agency of AFOSP-APFP in Laos, helped farmers with the storage and processing of their produce so these will not go to waste.
LFN also produced communication materials such as videos to share the situation of the farmers during the lockdown. These videos were widely shared on social media and they reached the government and private organizations. Upon learning that tons of harvested vegetables and fruits were going to waste, government and other organizations extended help to farmers by purchasing their goods and providing transportation so the products can be brought to the markets.
