Farmers in Tiakkyi township in Myanmar grow vegetables and fruits including grapes, lime, lemon, and guava. According to U Than Mg, they used to sell these in the town, but after joining the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association, they now have space at Thirimingalar fruits and vegetables wholesale market to sell their produce.
Before, union and non-union members sell their produce at their farms and at the town at a low price offered by buyers. Now, since they have this space at the wholesale market, township union leaders have taken the initiative to buy and transport the farmland produce to Thirimingalar market where one of their union members is in charge of selling the produce. This way, farmers are able to get the right price for their produce.
Right now, there are more than 10 farmers who come and sell their produce directly to the federation which benefits them. As for the farmers who do not sell their produce to the union leaders, they at least know the right price at which we are buying which is beneficial for them when they sell to other merchants.
