Gilgit-Baltistan is a region of remarkable agricultural potential, yet its progress has been hindered by inadequate farmer guidance and resource scarcity, causing the agricultural sector’s growth to languish.
In recent years, the Agribusiness Support Fund (ASF), our partner in Pakistan, dedicated efforts toward addressing these challenges. With support from ARISE (funded by IFAD) and APFP-FO4A (co-financed by IFAD and EU) programs, they have initiated a transformative journey.
This journey has seen the establishment of 162 farmers’ cooperative societies across the region, orchestrated through strategic alliances with diverse organizations and institutions. These collaborations aim to empower farmers by enhancing their capabilities and capacities. Through the establishment of these cooperative societies, a platform has emerged where experts offer valuable guidance to farmers, fostering an environment of mutual learning and knowledge exchange.
The outcomes of these cooperative societies have exceeded expectations. Farmers are acquiring newfound skills, and their overall livelihoods are also witnessing a marked improvement. This upward trajectory is a testament to the power of collective effort and shared wisdom, driving the region’s agricultural sector toward a more prosperous and sustainable future.
