On 1 March 2020, AFOSP-APFP Thailand and RIA team visited the Roadside Market owned and operated by Kok Edoi Community in Srakaeo Province, eastern Thailand. Kok Edoi is the forest-dependent peasants’ community and member of Assembly of the Poor (AOP). The community, once forced to be relocated, occupied the land that the government promised to give them for over 20 years. Although the official transfer of land to villagers is delayed for two decades, our members settle in the land, organize themselves and create self-management systems: land allocation, land use, family forests, community forest, community welfare, agroecological production, sustainable forest product collecting rules, fish and bullfrog sanctuary, forest fire-prevention system, and its own roadside market.

“If you visit Thailand next time, don’t forget to drop by our Kok Edoi Community Market in Srakao province. You can find all kinds of native food and forest products, reaffirming our member’s effort to protect the richness of biodiversity in our community forests.”
