WAMTI (Indonesian Farmer and Fisher Society Organization) organized a farmer leaders consultation on 23-24 February 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia to discuss and formulate market operational linkage between WAMTI’s rural enterprises networks (UPED) and its Farmers Market Distribution Centre (PDPP).

Seventeen men and women farmer leaders/representatives from 7 WAMTI’s district chapters assembled to discuss and formulate a concept to facilitate market operational linkage between WAMTI’s rural enterprises networks as WAMTI’s cooperative initiative in the rural level and its Farmers Market Distribution Centre, a regional collective marketing system that has been initiated by WAMTI’s members to solved marketing issues of their farmers commodity.

Two initial commodities have been identified in this stage–red hot chili pepper and red onion, which are used by Indonesian people for their daily consumption. Ten districts from several member provinces have been identified to possibly be involved in this initial market distribution system which are mostly from West Java, Banten, and East Java.

This initiative can hopefully solve marketing issues faced by farmer members including:

  1. farmers not enjoying a high selling price due to direct sales to middleman instead of consumers,
  2. high disparity price between market and farmers level,
  3. price variations among farmers itself, and
  4. farmers practical thinking to get cash and carry for next production or domestic needs, etc.
