Young Farmers Open Letter Entry #9: Shiela Lyn Nollan, Philippines

I am Shiela Lyn A. Nollan, 32 years old, from Pamplona, Camarines Sur, Philippines. I know little about agriculture because we used to own a farm, which we had to mortgage when my father got severely sick.

Growing up, I engaged in sports and it became an important aspect of my life. Sports became my source of income, and I was able to help my parents with our financial needs. However, it is not a steady source of income because I don’t always win.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I realized how important agriculture is. I began to dream of good things for my family—for us to eat clean, safe, and healthy food. And so, I enrolled for a Full Organic Production course at TESDA, a government institution. I successfully finished my courses and have earned two certificates. Aside from this, I am motivated by the altruism of the cooperative which I am a member. Through the cooperative, I learned to appreciate agriculture more. Without agriculture and young farmers, our country will be in despair.

To our legislators, please review the implementation of agricultural laws in our country. If we really want food security, food sufficiency, and affordable and accessible food, the government must allocate ample budget for the agriculture sector.
