Umnugobi Province, Mongolia – The Lusyn Serchim Cooperative, a member of the National Association of Mongolian Agricultural Cooperatives (NAMAC), was established in 2013 with 109 members. The cooperative helps its members sell their livestock raw materials in order to increase their main income. Currently, the cooperative has 205 members.
In October 2017, Amgalan Khungee, manager of the cooperative, attended the Asia-Pacific Women Farmers’ Forum held in India. The forum was organized by the consortium Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC) together with SEWA through the MTCP2 program financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The forum served as a venue for women farmers under the Asia-Pacific Farmers Forum to share their knowledge and experiences from their own organizations or cooperatives.
After attending the forum, Amgalan Khungee started thinking of ways to motivate the women members of the cooperative. Getting inspiration from the popular folk proverb, “Seeing once is better than hearing a thousand times”, she decided to include women members in learning travels abroad. A total of 42 women participated in three learning travels to China and Russia, which were supported by the cooperative. In addition, two trainings were organized to consolidate female members of the cooperative.
In 2021, a women’s committee of the cooperative was formed in order to help others and promote the cooperative in their community. The Lusyn Serchim women’s committee is referred to as “Uran goo”.
Recently, the women’s committee organized its first meeting with all its members where they planned their activities for 2022, which include a series of self-development training and helping elderly people for preparing dairy products.
The women committee members plan to organize social activities to learn from the experiences of women committees of farmers’ organizations in other countries.
