I am Vorn Samphors, a 28-year-old farmer living in Taing Por village, Prambey Mom commune, Tporng district, Kampong Speu province, Cambodia. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from the Royal University of Agriculture in 2017.
Cropping and providing agricultural services to support farmers are my interests. Therefore, after graduating, I returned to my hometown to share what I have learned with other rural youths. I want to promote youth participation in agricultural extension in my country.
COVID-19 brought many challenges to millions of people and has affected the world economy, including Cambodia’s. Many people became jobless because economic activities halted. Among these are young rural people. The pandemic caused serious challenges for the youth. The lockdown prevented passing from one province to another and it caused the stock up of agricultural products, with its price sharply slumping down. The price of agricultural inputs increased, resulting in a lack of capital for farm investment among farmers. Any form of meeting and gathering was not allowed and this hindered facilitating and providing technical support which resulted in the delayed linkage of agri-products to the market.
In response to the above challenges, the Cambodian National Youth Network and Agricultural Cooperative have intervened with some strategies. First, by requesting a pass from the province to Phnom Penh through the office of Agricultural Cooperative Promotion of Kampong Speu province as the primary distribution channel for delivering farmers’ products to markets. Second, by requesting to the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery (PDAFF) to provide support through the provision of farm equipment and inputs for 30 off-farm job migrants that have returned to farming in their hometown (they were rendered jobless by the pandemic). Furthermore, my team and I always raise challenges faced by farmers as well as possible solutions to PDAFF and other stakeholders in various meetings and workshops to lift taxation on farm’ inputs, equipment, and transportation services to reduce production costs and facilitate agricultural loans with low interest to maximize profit. Third, an agri-products distribution center, funded by IFAD with support from PDAFF, is currently under construction. This will promote the value chain among our members. Lastly, we requested the government to allocate Social Land Concession (SLC) to landless and small land-holding young farmers to enable them to turn back to farming.
If my suggestions are accepted by the government, I will encourage the participation of rural youth to enhance farm productivity and better market linkage, and continue to mobilize rural youth to invest in farming to contribute to the progress and stability of Cambodian agriculture.
